  • Angelic Creations Doll and Toy Hospital

A doll and teddy bear hospital west of Chicago, run by the same person for over forty years and now working from home. It takes stuffed animals as readily as dolls, and accepts donated toys for parts.

  • Backus Design Works

A small craft studio that repairs stuffed animals and soft sculpture, originally set up to cover warranty work on its own 'MY KIDS' toys and now taking in other makers' items too. You email photos first, they propose a replacement fabric, and stuffing is replaced with polyester fibre fill unless you ask about other options.

A mother-and-daughter stuffed animal repair service in New York, whose six-year-old president once said the business would run until she was a grown-up. Their work is lovely and their last post is from February 2013, announcing a brief hiatus until spring.

How this list was built

Every entry was read off the business's own public pages. 2 of the 14 look untouched for years: a copyright several years old, a shop promising to reopen on a date that has passed, a page booked through a year that is over. We do not name which, because we have not asked any of them and being publicly guessed at is not something you should take from a stranger.

That rate depends on how you look. Businesses found by search alone are flagged at 38%; those found through trade lists and associations, 18%. Search rewards an old site with old links, so a list built only from search carries twice as many ghosts as one built from the trade itself.
